As a hunter primarily concerned with fish and small amphibians, the herlixx are a most unusual breed of amphibious predator. While excellent swimmers in their own right, these residents of Kasiol's third planet spend an equal amount of time on land in the plentiful swamps. Their long forearms aid them in moving from tree to tree, and dropping down from overhanging branches into the water on unsuspecting prey. When not swinging through forest canopies, the average herlixx is a surface feeder, using its thick deposits of fat to float just below the water's surface or using its long toes to grasp on to vines and branches while the arms try to capture food. It also uses its feet like paddles, skimming across marsh or river tributaries in search of food. It normally hunts during early morning hours when competition with other predators is slight; it often rests during afternoons, making it an easy target for daytime hunters.
Despite their somewhat frightening appearance, there is no recorded instance of any herlixx ever attacking a sapient resident of the planet. Often, when they encounter colonists, the reaction is a mixture of curiosity and fear – they will flee the settlers at the slightest unusual sound or sudden movement. |
